My wife and I are living our own episode of "This Old House" and this website displays many of the before and after photos of the improvements we are making to the house, the barns and the property.
Built in 1850 and located in Lebanon, CT it has become quite a project restoring. The previous owner had let the property overgrow and the barns go into a state of disrepair. The house itself was move-in condition, but every room in the house needs a bit of attention due to poor craftsmanship and cheap materials.
As a result of that, the property was affordable for us in a difficult housing market.
The property itself is 4 acres with 650+ feet of road frontage and there are 2 barns. The smaller barn I use for the goats and chickens and the larger barn is an English Style Barn that was built sometime in the 1850's. It is structurally sound with beautiful wood beams and a nice stone foundation. I am working on this barn one side at a time and I have a lot of work left to do, but one day it will again be the pride of this property. We love living here in Lebanon which is rich with history, dirt roads and good people. It is not at all that uncommon to see a horse drawn carriage traveling down the road or a farmer out haying his field.
Back when we discussed buying this place I had asked my wife for 10 years to fix it all up and after that time if she did not like what I have done, we can sell and move on. Well after 5 years of work so far, she does not want to go anywhere ! I dont want to brag or anything but I believe we may actually be a bit ahead of my own schedule, but this is no time to rest, I'll have plenty of time for that when I am dead !
