My wife and I are living our own episode of "This Old House" and this website displays many of the before and after photos of the improvements we are making to the house, the barns and the property. When we discussed buying this place I told her that it would take 10 years to reverse the mess that this place had become and that after some time if she did not like how it was looking, we can just sell and move on. Well after 5 years of work so far, she does not want to go anywhere !
Built in 1850 and located in Lebanon, CT , this place has become quite a project restoring. The previous owner had let the property overgrow and the barns go into a state of disrepair. The house itself was move-in condition, but every room in the house needs a bit of attention due to poor craftsmanship and cheap materials.
As a result of all the work that needed to be done, the property was now affordable for us in a difficult housing market. If it were not for the land and the barns we would never have wasted our time, but it looked like it was at least worth trying !
The property itself is almost 4 acres with 650+ feet of road frontage and there are 2 barns. The smaller barn I now use for the goats and chickens and the larger barn is an English Style Barn that was built sometime in the 1850's. It is structurally sound with beautiful wood beams and a nice stone foundation. I am working on this barn one side at a time and I have a lot of work left to do, but one day it will again be the pride of this property. We love living here in Lebanon which is rich with history, dirt roads and good people. Throughout the summer and fall its a common sight to see a horse drawn carriage or a hay wagon travel past the house, almost the way you would imagine it to be if you stepped back in time to the 1800's when life wasnt so hectic and crazy...
