I thought that this wall would be perfect for my stairway to access the loft. (5) Yet another mess, this wall had some ranshackled shelving and benches that I enjoyed ripping out ! I guess this was the previous owners idea of a work area. After a major cleanup and a crowbar session, I got this wall back to the its original state.
The bright area in the back left side in (6) is a new opening I cut to another room where I installed cabinets and built a bench in.
The old door you see is an original exit for the barn but will no longer be used so I blocked off that area.
The flooring in this area was in rough shape so I tore it all out and layed in new 1 3/4" oak to abut the first section I replaced.
The beams under this floor are in great shape and there is about a 1 foot deep crawlspace

Now I could build a stairway to the loft. (7) In the beginning I thought that a two stage 90 degree design with a landing half way upwould save me floor space and would look nice but after some measuring I realized a straight set actually worked out better and allowed for more room on the lower level.
The 4x4's add all the support I need and will provide a good place for a railing and possibly another small bench area in the future. I am trying to leave myself a lot of options for the future as I build this shop area.
Inside this old barn...
Its time to get creative on the inside and get myself a workshop !
You think I had a mess? To the left is a photo I took the day I got disgusted with not being able to find "something". I always thought that this area would make a nice little workshop so I rented a dumpster , grabbed a crowbar and once again got busy!
The wall that you see in the back is the barn exterior on the side of the tractor bay that I rebuilt last year. I removed all the half assed shelving in here and got this area down to the original beams.
I wanted to seperate these 2 areas so I nailed in additional 4x4's for support and put up a wall. (2) Its now a good place for a workbench.
This photo also shows the loft area above the shop which will be getting all new oak flooring.

This wall faces west and being a dark area to begin with I decided to cut in 2 windows (3) that let in a lot of light from around mid morning till sunset.
They will also be nice during the warmer months for air circulation. Not to mention that they look awesome from the outside ! All of our friends and family know that Im a pack rat and will take any old wood or building materials and put them to good use.
For example, the long bench to the right is made of old pine shelving that was given to us from a good friend along with those 2 windows from a house being updated and remodeled.
                                                        Thanks Carol !

New flooring for this entire area of the barn was a must. (4)I ripped up the old planking and installed all new 1 3/4" rough cut oak flooring from the sawmill in town. Its starting to look a little bit more like a workshop instead of that sad excuse of a storage area.
