These chicks were born in June of '06. A big thanks goes out to Mary Ann for these chicks, they are called "Feather Footed Fancies". The only bird that grew up being the same color as it was as a chick was the gold one and we call her Marilyn (as in Marilyn Monroe)
This stall is 8ft wide and 10' long and the entire floor is cement as is the rest of this barn. I wired the door and the top of the stall to keep them from roosting all over the barn and making a mess.
After looking through some photos on the web and reading the "good and bad" of each design from the creators point of view , I took what I liked best from them and started banging nails. Its very basic and it is a breeze to clean. The front panel and the nest dividers are all "slide outs" , nothing is nailed in except the frame. Each nest has about a 5" layer of pine shavings.
The Outside Run
The run is 12ft x 12ft and it will keep the birds protected but it also will keep my goats from eating the barn ! As you can see they have fun chewing the cedar shakes off the side. Chickens are great scavengers to have around the property and I let them free range through out the day and only lock them up at night. Surprisingly the hens have never layed an egg anywhere but in their coup. I have seen them in a full blown run for the coup just to lay an egg ! I always heard the horror stories of having to look for the eggs or finding them weeks later.
We started with 11 chicks and 7 of them turned out to be Roosters!
Now we are down to 3 hens and one rooster that I call "Speedy" because he was the fastest and hardest to grab on that fateful day. Here are the 4 birds we have left out of that batch...
When I mentioned to my dad that I would like to raise some chickens he said "well I would just cut a hole in the side of the barn and make one of those old stalls a chicken coup"...
It was a another great idea and it is working like a charm... Thanks Dad !
